Christine Adamec
Adoption Expert![]() "I see adoption as a social solution to so many social problems: Poverty, racism, child abuse, political strife, crisis pregnancies, and all the many other reasons why biological parents are sometimes unable to raise their children. I'm an adoptive parent and adoption advocate, and I'm also a freelance writer and an author. I've been writing about adoption since 1981, when I wrote a cover story on adoption for a military magazine read by people in all service branches and their families. After the article ran, the editor said they'd never received so many letters to the editor in response to any story. (Overwhelmingly positive letters.) I subsequently wrote several other pieces about adoption, and was intrigued by the adoptive parents I interviewed and their children, and enjoyed attending their support group meetings, parties, and picnics – there were so many fascinating stories to listen to! My husband and I later adopted our son, to join the two children who were born to us. My first adoption book was published in 1987 and I've written six books on adoption since then, published as recently as 2002. I've received letters and e-mails thanking me for writing the books, and telling me that what I wrote helped people have the confidence to adopt. One lady came up to me at an adoption conference before I was to speak, and handed me a photo of her child, saying, "Here's my daughter. I adopted her after I read your book. Thank you." Those moments are really special. My most recent adoption books are: There ARE Babies to Adopt, The Encyclopedia of Adoption, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adoption, and Is Adoption for You?. I also assisted with the update of The Encyclopedia of Child Abuse, adding important information about adoption. I'm currently working on an adoptive parenting book with a pediatrician who's an adoptive parent. I've written many feature articles about adoption since 1981, although now I primarily concentrate on writing books. (Including medical self-help books.) I started a support group for adoptive parents in 1988, because I had urged readers to join an adoptive parents support group, but we had no group in our area. That group still helps people. In addition, I've served as the adoptive parent representative on the statewide Florida Advisory Council on Adoption. I've also published several adoption newsletters in the past." | |
