Course Summary
What do newborns need? How can a home be prepared for a newborn? How can parents adjust to their new roles? From outings to nap time, newborns have a way of changing the way a family works. By better understanding parenting styles and preparing for the basics of baby care and safety in today’s society, parents can afford themselves more time to enjoy the amazing miracle wrapped up in their little bundle(s) of joy.

During this 4-week class, expectant and new parents will learn baby care basics —- including feeding, diapering, choosing a pediatrician, parenting methods, and expected baby growth and development. The instructor will guide parents in managing the realities of a new baby. Additionally, parents will learn how infant cues and safety precautions change as their newborn enters various stages of development.

About the Instructor:
As the Perinatal Outreach Coordinator at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, Kathee Boyer, RN manages the hospital’s many childbirth education classes (delivered in English, Spanish and Korean). With more than 12 years experience as a labor and delivery nurse on the floors of Good Samaritan Hospital’s Davajan-Cabal Center for Perinatal Medicine she watched as her unit became the fastest growing perinatal unit in the city. As an integral member of the perinatal unit’s team, she is trained to support the needs of any birthing situation, from the routine to the complex in which the expertise of the unit’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care is needed. In addition to her experience on the floor of the Labor and Delivery unit, Kathee is able to share in the experiences her and her husband have as they actively take part in raising their two children, ages 10 and 7.

Who Should Take This Course:
Couples who are expecting a baby are encouraged to take this course before birth. Parents of newborns may also benefit from this class after the birth, as the instructor will explain development and cover basic care. Older siblings and family members who will be caring for the baby (or just enjoying him or her) are also welcome.
